Deployment Day Session 1: Introduction to MDT 2012.To help visualize some of the steps I have outlined above, I recommend the following two videos which explain the deployment process using MDT: After you successfully capture your image, you could easily push it out with MDT. Next, you could either use MDT’s standard sysprep or capture task sequence or a capture utility such as ImageX. Sysprep / generalize removes all system specific information to allow the image to be installed on other machines. mig file if you created one during this step.Īlternatively, you could customize your reference system in audit mode and run sysprep /generalize with an unattend file that has the copyprofile setting enabled to prepare the image for capture. Next, you would create a task sequence with your necessary requirements (domain join, systemlocale, keyboardlocale, time zone, etc.) After you would boot to your Windows PE / Lite Touch environment from the system you are looking to prepare and you would run your task sequence with the associated image.

One way is to import a clean image of Windows 7 into your MDT DeploymentShare and then add all necessary drivers and applications. There are a number of ways your customization, sysprep, capture and deployment process could work. MDT allows you to easily add both applications and drivers as well as import all user data into the new environment using the User State Migration Tool (also free.) There is a great Windows 7 Walkthrough video on the Springboard Series on TechNet website available here. Perhaps one of the more popular as Brian mentioned, is the Microsoft Deployment Toolkit (MDT). I know we have a lot of users on the forums using these tools and can post more info on this if you like.Īs Chris mentioned, there are quite a bit of free tools that can assist you in easily creating an image and then proceed to deploying it. Microsoft has many free tools to create an image for deployment.

As many know, it takes a minimum of 5 total licenses (1 just has to be Windows Pro Upgrade) to start an Open agreement.

If you would like to create a standard image, at minimum you need 1 Windows Pro Upgrade license via Open Business to gain these rights. These rights are called reimaging rights and these rights are granted only to VL customers. Each individual PC will need to activate.Īs Bryan mentioned (above), license-wise you need to use VL media and keys to create a standard image for deployment.

No you would not activate the image before deploying it. Since I have VLK I have the key entered (though I use MDT for automated installs instead of sysprep/imaging) and let it take care of itself. Also when I am prepping the source computer should I not activate it online? AKA use it in trial mode or it doesn't matter?ĭon't know.
